Kal Bhairab

Bhairab is a destructive aspect of Shiva. It is fashioned out of one single stone .It shows Bhairava standing on a prostrate evil doer. This image presents the very dynamic and terrifying nature of the god and it has six arms .Two of them are held in front of him giving an impression of gentleness and  calm .The other arms in contrast represent the horrifying aspect of  Bhairava. Two of the arms hold a trident and along black sword threateningly. In one of his left hands, he holds a red disk while in the other; he grasps three severed heads by their hair. You can also see a garland of human heads in his neck and human skulls in his headdress-all in order to terrify evil being.
This sculpture was found at 17th century by King Pratap Malla while constructing the underground water channels from Nagarjun forest. It is very old sculpture and it believed to be of 6th century.
It say that when the King Pratap Malla tries to build the temple for the Kal Bhairawa .Bhairawa didn’t agree to be kept in the Temple because he is the lord of justice and have to see the justice every time and even have to fly every time to see the justice so he isn’t kept in the Temple .Since he is the lord of justice it is said that if someone lied in front of this image, he would vomit blood and die. You know that when there is a dispute, one of the two parties always lies and because of its reputation, no one dared to lie in front of it.
